#SheHacks: the hackathon for Girl Geeks

#SheHacks is an all-female hackathon, now in it’s third year. You are invited to learn new skills, test new business ideas and meet new people to build the internet with 😀

Unlike other hackathons you don’t have to pitch to get started. Kicking off on Friday night you will be placed into teams of 3-4 and your ideas will come from those teams. You’ll eat awesome food, spend quality time getting to know other women doing amazing things with technology, and work together to bring something new to life.

So work out whether you’re a hipster (designer), hacker (developer) or a hustler (marketer / business development / subject matter expert / sales) and buy your ticket today!

Australia's first all-female hackathon

In 2014 Girl Geek Dinners Melbourne teamed up with Georgi Knox and the Girl Geek Dinners Sydney crew to host the first ever Australian all-female Hackathon – SheHacks.

She Hacks is always a sellout event. In 2014, we sold out in one week so we added another two teams – the extra 6 tickets sold in a few hours with the first 3 getting snapped up in 10 minutes!

For many participants, this is their first foray into a hackathon, while others are serial entrepreneurs. There’s a whole range of talent in the room. Some teams have more business talent, and some teams have less. It’s a great opportunity to meet new people, learn something, build something and network with other amazing people in a meaningful way.

MOST IMPORTANT: What are we eating?

We LOVE great food and say no to beer and pizza at Hackathons – it’s even written in our manifesto! We believe in great food for our events and go out of our way to make sure we are a happy, healthy bunch of girl geeks. This means fruit, quality meals and catering for a range of dietary requirements.

Who is #SheHacks aimed at? Am I invited?

She Hacks is for women of any age with programming, design, user experience, marketing, entrepreneurship or project management skills. The aim is to create diverse teams with a broad range of skills to enable the team to build something together during the event. If that sounds like you – come along!

What do I need to bring?
A working laptop, and a desire to contribute! You must be able to attend both days.
Can men attend?
Yes, but as per the GGD guidelines you need to be accompanied by a Girl Geek. Given the limited spaces available, priority will be given to female applicants.
How big are the teams?

We find that a team of three works best. It’s large enough to have diverse skills (hacker, hustler, hipster) yet small enough to get to know your team members well in a short space of time.

I have an idea, can I pitch it?

Unlike most hackathons, we don’t start the event on Friday with a pitch. For those of you that already have an idea you’d like to see come to life, you need to talk through with your team and see if it’s the best idea for your team to build.

What language can I code in?
Anything you desire!
Who owns the code I write?
You do, unless you’re using something that belongs to someone else.
I can't code - can I still attend?

Yes! In fact, a well-rounded team of different skill sets might just give you the advantage! Think Hipster (designer), Hacker (programmer) and Hustler (marketing and business – growth hacker).

What if I sign-up alone or don't have a group?
Don’t worry if you don’t know anyone attending. Groups will be formed on the Friday night, there will be lots of time to mingle and get to know other attendees.

#SHEHACKS IN THE MEDIA

GIRL
GEEKS
ARE
GREAT!

We want to raise the profile of women in technology and encourage more of you to speak, teach and be visible to the women on their way up. We need more role models and yes – you are one!

We invite you to become a member of Girl Geek Academy so we can say: “Here’s what Girl Geeks look like and here is what they do”.

For $99 we will:
– help you write your bio if you don’t already have one
– give you first access to our events, which usually sell out in 24 hours
– share with you the Girl Geek Academy personal brand kit

Help us reach 1000 women and let’s continue to create #SheHacks, #SheMakes and #SheMakes_Games and also help us launch new initiatives the Girl Geek way.

We have plenty more up our sleeve and we need your help to make it happen. If you’re up for helping us get to one million girl geeks become a member today!
